TROUT RUN - Kermit Long, 96, of Trout Run, died Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Manor Care, Jersey Shore.  

Born May 26, 1920 in Onego, WV, he was the son of the late Sheridan and Mary Jane (Vance) Long.  Kermit was married to Elizabeth M. (Bickel) and together they shared 66 years of marriage before her passing on December 20, 2011.

Kermit retired at age 62, throughout his life, he was a farmer and a woodsman; he worked at a Stone shop in Larryville and the Jersey Shore Borough.  Kermit had served in the US Army during WWll from 1942 to 1945 in the 82nd Airborne Paratroopers and was assigned to Co. F 325th Glider Inf. Regt. He was a member of an Airborne Rifle Squad carrying extra ammunition for the Browning Automatic Rifle.  He occasionally used the Garand Rifle and the Browning Automatic Rifle in combat. He participated in the D Day Invasion of Normandy and at Salerno, Italy.  Kermit was injured in combat and had received a Purple Heart; he also received many other awards including a Good Conduct Medal.  He was a member of the American Legion in Jersey Shore.

Kermit was a devoted, loving family man and he always put his family first.  He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren. Kermit was well known as a kind man who was always ready to help anyone in need.

He is survived by 2 sons, Jimmie D. Long of Linden, Kermit “Ed” (Hilda) Long of Brookside and 2 daughters Maxine L. (John) Wetzel of Blossburg and Dorsalee “Dot” (Jim) Fuller of Brookside. Kermit is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, and a set of twin great-great grandchildren due in September.

In addition to his parents and wife, Kermit was predeceased by 6 brothers and 4 sisters and a great granddaughter, Jordan Emert.

Family and Friends are invited to a visitation Monday, August 15, 2016 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 PM, at the Rearick Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny Street, Jersey Shore. Burial will be at Summit Cemetery, White Pine.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Kermit’s love for children, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Judes Children’s Hospital, 14 Penn Plz Ste 1615, New York, NY 10122 or at stjude.org
