Funeral Ceremony

Funerals are one of the most important ceremonies in human history. They let people mourn and say goodbye in a respectful way. At the funeral, family and friends pay their respects to the person who has died, tell stories about them, and console each other. It gives those who are still alive a place to think about the life and death of their loved one at a set time and place.
At Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, Ltd. we know that funerals are not just for remembering someone who has died. Funerals help people who have lost loved ones start to heal, find meaning in their lives, and have hope. For many years, our trained staff has provided compassionate, personalized funeral services to families in Jersey Shore, Antes Fort, Avis, Oval, Linden, Salladasburg, McElhattan, Dunnstown, and Lycoming County. We're here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Every Funeral Service Is Unique

Some families like memorial services, cremation, or celebrations of life, but many still like traditional funerals. Funerals have been a way for people to mourn, remember, and support each other in almost every culture for generations.

At Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, Ltd., our top priority is to give your loved one the best tribute possible. Contrary to what most people think, funeral services are not all the same. They could be anything from traditional religious services to more casual, personalized celebrations that show off your loved one's interests and personality.

Our dedicated staff works closely with each family to plan a funeral that truly honors the life of your loved one, gives you and your family the best chance to say goodbye, respects your cultural and religious traditions, and fits your budget. We think that funerals should be meaningful but not too expensive, and we help families find the right balance.

After decades of serving the Jersey Shore area, we are proud to offer families quality, affordable funeral services during their hardest times. We are honored to help each family through their grief, and we are always there for them after the service.

Understanding What a Funeral Truly Means

You probably picture a scene when someone says "funeral." There are many things that shape this mental picture, such as where you live, your cultural background, your faith, and your own life experiences. A funeral service in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, could look very different from one in California, Texas, or New York. There are also big differences between different ethnic, religious, and cultural groups in our own area.

Even with these differences, funeral services around the world have some things in common and serve the same purposes. Families can make better choices during a hard and emotional time if they know what a funeral is and what it can be.

The Traditional Funeral Process

Our staff at Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home in Jersey Shore, PA can help you understand how to plan a funeral and make things easier for you during this hard time. When you call 570-398-1730, our 24-hour transfer service begins. We will bring your loved one into our care from any hospital, nursing home, or private home in Jersey Shore, Antes Fort, Avis, or the surrounding Lycoming County after they die. Within a day or two, you'll meet with one of our professional funeral directors to talk about what you want, look at service options and prices, choose products, work with clergy and cemeteries, and start writing the obituary.

Then, with respect, our staff embalms, dresses, and displays your loved one as if they were a member of our own family. Friends, extended family, and members of the community can pay their respects and offer their condolences during the visitation. After that, there will be a meaningful funeral ceremony that lasts 30 minutes to an hour at our funeral home, your place of worship, or another location. After the funeral procession takes your loved one to their final resting place for a short service, many families hold a reception or lunch. After the service, we will continue to help your family with grief support, aftercare, and questions in the weeks and months that follow.

Personalizing Your Loved One's Funeral

We believe the best funerals are the ones that honor the person who died in a unique way. Our staff is trained to help families add personal touches that turn a regular service into a real celebration of life.

  • Custom Video Tributes - We create professional video tributes featuring photographs, video clips, and music that tell your loved one's story. These presentations can be shown during the visitation, service, or both, and families receive copies to keep and share.
  • Memorial Displays - We can help you create displays featuring your loved one's hobbies, collections, achievements, or interests. Whether it's fishing gear, military memorabilia, quilts they made, or photographs from their travels, these displays spark memories and conversations.
  • Music Selection - From traditional hymns to contemporary songs to your loved one's favorite classics, music sets the tone for the service. Live musicians, recorded music, or a combination can be arranged.
  • Personalized Printed Materials - Memorial folders, prayer cards, and programs can be customized with photographs, poems, and designs that reflect your loved one's personality.
  • Special Ceremonies - We can incorporate special elements like butterfly releases, dove releases, balloon releases, lighting ceremonies, military honors, fraternal organization rituals, or any other meaningful traditions.
  • Live Streaming - For family and friends who cannot attend in person—whether due to distance, health, or other circumstances—we offer live streaming services so they can participate remotely.

FAQ

  • How soon after a death should we contact a funeral home?

You should call a funeral home as soon as you can after someone dies, but you don't have to rush if you need some time to think about what happened.  If your loved one died in a hospital, nursing home, or hospice, the staff there can keep them until you get in touch with us.  If someone dies at home, please call us right away so we can start the process of caring for your loved one with respect.  We're here for you 24/7 and can help you figure out what to do next whenever you're ready to call.

  • What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial service?

The main difference is whether the body or the ashes of the deceased are present.  Before the body is buried or burned, a funeral service is held with the body present.  A memorial service is held without the body present, either because it has already been cremated or buried, or because the body is not available.  Both types of services serve the same purposes: to honor the dead, help those who are grieving, and bring closure.  Memorial services are easier to plan because they don't have to happen at the same time as the burial or cremation.

  • How do we choose between burial and cremation?

This deeply personal decision depends on many factors including religious beliefs, personal preferences, environmental concerns, family traditions, and budget considerations. Neither option is inherently better—what matters is choosing what feels right for your loved one and your family. Some religious traditions have specific requirements or preferences. Some people feel strongly about maintaining a physical gravesite to visit, while others prefer the flexibility cremation provides. Our staff can discuss the differences, costs, and options associated with each choice to help you make an informed decision without any pressure.
