Obituary

Ruth N. Nice, 88 of Pottstown and formerly of Jersey Shore passed away, Saturday, October 19, 2026, in Allentown, PA. Born on June 1, 1938, in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, she was the daughter of John and Ellen (Kaskus) Volansky.

Ruth was a lifelong learner and dedicated educator who devoted much of her life to nursing, teaching, and serving others. She graduated as valedictorian of Wilkes-Barre Township High School, third in her class at the Nesbitt Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her Registered Nurse (RN) qualification, and later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Wilkes University.

Her professional career reflected her passion for education and her commitment to preparing future generations of nurses. She taught at Muhlenberg Hospital School of Nursing, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing, and Claysburg Junior and Senior High School. In 1979, she began teaching at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, where she served for more than 20 years before retiring in December 1998.

Faith was central to Ruth’s life, guiding her ministry, volunteer work, and relationships with others. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Gilbertsville, where she served as prayer chain chair, and served in numerous capacities, including the Music and Worship Committee, the Christian Education Committee, and the church nursery at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jersey Shore. She helped create Chrismons for churches, played in handbell choir, and established the St. Luke’s prayer chain ministry, serving as its chair from its inception until her death. She was also active in Lutheran Church Women and served as a delegate to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Biennial Assembly in 1984.

Her commitment to the church extended throughout her life. She taught Sunday school at all three congregations served by her husband and was an approved lay preacher for the Central Pennsylvania and Upper Susquehanna Synods. Through her faith and service, she touched the lives of many within her church communities and beyond.

Ruth’s service extended beyond the church. She founded the Jersey Shore Girls Basketball Booster Club and served as treasurer for four years, volunteered with the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program, and served on Upper Pottsgrove’s Emergency Response Committee. Whether supporting families affected by cancer, encouraging young athletes, or offering prayer and comfort, Ruth generously shared her time and talents.

On July 27, 1963, Ruth married Rev. Donald G. Nice. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage, building a life rooted in family, faith, and service.

She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Ruth Ellen; her husband, Donald; and her brother, John N. Volansky.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois Horne (Randall) of Millington, Tennessee; her son, Jonathan Nice (Michelle Brynes) of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; two granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Nice; and her nephew, John Michael Volansky.

Ruth will be remembered for her dedication to nursing and education, her unwavering faith, her generous spirit, and her lifelong commitment to serving others. Her legacy lives on in the many students she taught, the churches she served, the communities she strengthened, and the family she cherished.

A Life Tribute will be held at 10:00 a.m. on October 24, 2026, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 229 South Broad Street, Jersey Shore, PA 17740, with Rev. Dr. Kerry Auker officiating. Public visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Jersey Shore Cemetery.
