(Hunter) Summerson
February 6, 1944 – July 10, 2025
Mary Ellen (Hunter) Summerson, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 81. Mary was born on February 6, 1944, in Lock Haven to the late Anthony and Mary (Motter) Hunter.
Mary spent most of her working career managing the Clinton County SPCA, where her profound passion for animals shone brightly. She also shared her love for equestrian pursuits by volunteering at Horses of Hope and teaching horseback riding and care, imparting her knowledge and enthusiasm to many students over the years.
An avid animal lover, Mary found joy in horseback riding and gardening, especially tending to her beloved flowers. Her greatest happiness came from family gatherings and being surrounded by her loved ones. She was an active member of the Avis Legion and the Legion Women's Auxiliary Club, where she built lasting friendships and contributed to her community.
Along with her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Winfield M. Summerson, Sr.; her stepson, Winfield M. Summerson, Jr.; her daughter, Lindey Frazier; her great-grandchildren, Owen and Elijah Finerfrock; and her brother, Robert Litz.
She leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor her legacy: her daughters Kim (Lloyd R. Sr., 'Mary's favorite") Dugan and Cheryl (Greg) Schlesinger; her stepdaughters Terry Aurand, Barbara (Chet) Clements, Wenda (Stephen) Hibbler, and Merry Summerson (Randy Carson), and a stepson George Summerson. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda Kline, Heather Shoemaker, Stephanie Delaney, and Lloyd R. "Buck" Dugan, Jr., as well as 12 step-grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 21 step-great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and 20 step-great-great-grandchildren.
A public viewing will be held on July 16, 2025, at Rearick Carpenter Funeral Home, located at 1002 Allegheny Street, Jersey Shore, from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will follow on July 17, 2025, at Walnut Street Baptist Church, 201 West Highland Street, Avis, PA, at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Bellevue Cemetery in Avis.
Arrangements are being handled by Rearick Carpenter Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Mary's honor to the Walnut Street Baptist Church, reflecting her lifelong commitment to God and community.
