JERSEY SHORE - James L. Young, age 96, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 8, 2015 in Bradenton, Florida.

He was born on the family farm on October 12, 1919, in Level Corner, Linden, Pennsylvania, to George G. and Lulu (Bardo) Young. A 1937 graduate of Jersey Shore High School, he was the president of the Future Farmers of America in his senior year. After graduation he worked for Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven while attending Williamsport Tech.

In 1941, James married the late Bernice Rose (Taylor) Young of Antes Fort who was the mother of his two daughters, the late Darlene R. Rebstock and Joyce L. Young.  During World War II, from 1943-1946, he honorably served in the United States Navy in the Pacific. He was with the 7th Air Fleet aboard the USS Atlanta serving as an AM3C aviation metalsmith.

In the early 1950's, the family moved to Binghamton and then to Endwell, New York, where he spent his entire career in Vestal at the GAF Corporation as a project design engineer.  Holding many patents, he played a key role in the design and development of autopilots and copying machines.  Jim was active as a Sunday School Superintendent, a deacon, and served on numerous committees at Park Avenue Baptist Church in Binghamton, and later at Bethel Baptist Church in Vestal.

After 38 years of marriage, his beloved Bernice when home to be with the Lord in 1980.

In 1982, he met and married Mary Emery Furch of Binghamton. They moved to the Bradenton, Florida, area where he continued to serve others at New Hope Baptist Church, as the president of the home owners' association at Country Lakes II, as president of the neighborhood crime watch coalition, and, along with Mary, as cruise coordinators. For the past four years, they have resided at Waters Edge in Bradenton. They were married for 33 years.

Survivors include his wife Mary of Bradenton, FL; daughter Joyce of Elyria, OH; son-in-law Ernest C. Rebstock (Sue) of Ruskin, FL and Ft. Erie, Ontario. Grandchildren Heidi (Mark) Birtwistle of St. Davids, PA; Erik (Linda) Rebstock of Medford, NJ; Joely (Mike) Thomas Wilkinson of Sydney, Australia; and Drew (Joanne) of Deerfield, IL and North Africa.  Great-grandchildren Alexa, Erika, Maxwell, Jackson, Thomas, Kate and Madelynne. Survivors also include his brothers John H. of Jersey Shore and George G. (Gerry) of Greenville, SC; sister Margaret E. Davenport of Williamsport; brother-in- law Pete Weikle of Linden and numerous nieces and nephews. Additional survivors include Mary's family: Bill (Lynne) Furch of Page Lake, PA; Jim (Susan) Furch of Binghamton; George (Carlene) Furch of Candor, NY; Dale(Angela) Furch of Binghamton; Carol (Jay) Walden of Upland, CA; Fran Furch of Macedon, NY. Eleven step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Bernice; daughter Darlene; brother and sister-in -law Charles and Ella Young; sister Eleanor Weikle; sister-in-law Millie Young; and brother-in-law Galen Davenport.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, keeping a daily diary for over 50 years, reading, gardening, walking, butterflies, cruises, biking, summer picnics at Ansco Lake and horseshoes.

He was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ; devoted to his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend; a listener and an advisor

Visitation: Tuesday, November 17, 6-8 PM, Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, PA. Funeral Service:  Wednesday, November 18, 10 AM, Calvary Baptist Church, 315 Thompson St., Jersey Shore.  Additional visitation will be one-half hour prior to the service. Burial will be with Military Honors accorded by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard at the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
