Mona O. Sunderland, 87, of Avis, passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, at UPMC in Williamsport. She was born in Odense, Denmark, Sept. 7, 1932, a daughter of Anders Louis Christian and Gundrun Jensen Olsen. She was married in 1954 to Robert Cloyd Sunderland who passed away April 26, 2003. She came to the United States in 1959.
Mona was a seamstress her entire life and was employed by Weldon's in Williamsport. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Ivanhoe Chapter of The Order of Eastern Star. She was an advocate of animal welfare and pet adoption. She was a member of the Watson Township Board of Elections. She and her husband Robert operated a fresh fruit and vegetable stand in Watson Township just off Route 44 for years. Mona enjoyed visiting her homeland as often as she could.
Her survivors include a sister, Merete Pedersen, of Denmark; a niece, Connie Holm Oppermann (Claus), of Ringsted, Denmark; and a nephew, H. Nelson Demarest (Michele), of Jersey Shore; a special sister-in-law, Joan Demarest, of Linden, along with many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Mogens Olsen.
Mona's tribute of life service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, with Pastor Larry Siikanen officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., with Eastern Star services performed at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Montgomery.
