Melanio Acosta, Jr. MD Obituary

Melanio D. Acosta, Jr. MD, 87, of Jersey Shore, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at his residence. He was born in Batangas, Philippines on January 6, 1932, to the late Melanio, Sr. and Pelagia (Dilag) Acosta.

Mel worked as a general surgeon running his own practice for 30 years. He married the former Catherine White on July 8, 1961. Mel was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Jersey Shore. He loved to play poker, travel, golf and dance. Some of his favorite places to travel were Las Vegas, California and Florida to visit family. He loved to watch old western movies with Catherine. After he retired, he became an avid gardener growing both flowers and vegetables. Mel especially loved his roses.

Melanio is survived by his loving wife of over 58 years, Catherine Acosta, his three sons, Melanio (Ofelia) Acosta III, Circeville, OH, Michael (Karen) Acosta, Reading, PA, M. Michael Acosta, San Jose, CA; his two daughters, Christine Wilhelm, Jersey Shore, and Cynthia (Todd) Traister, Haymarket, VA; seven grandchildren, Max, Mason and Marlayna Wilhelm, Marissa Young, Sedonnah Traister, Melanio IV and Christian Acosta; a brother, Reynaldo (Norma) Acosta, Duarte, CA; and three sisters, Estelita Concepcion, Chino Hills, CA, Purisima Balgos, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Evangeline (Ting) DeClaro, Walnut, CA.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Melanio will be held on Tuesday, October 15 at 9:30am at St. Lukes Catholic Church, 118 Kendall Ave., Jersey Shore with Father Bert Kozen officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, October 14 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore and again from 9:00am-9:30am on Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in Jersey Shore Cemetery.
