John G. “Gunny” Orrico, 88, of Jersey Shore passed away at his residence late Friday night November 10, 2017.  He was born in New Castle, PA October 11, 1929.  In 1946 immediately out of high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  Through the end of WWII, through the Occupation Forces and the Korean War, John attained the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9).

Affectionately by his family, his peers and his friends John was known locally as “Gunny”.  Even after his return to civilian life, he devoted his time and knowledge of Military and US Flag protocol to all who needed advice.  Gunny belonged to all service connected organizations including the American Legion, VFW, Jersey Shore Veterans Council, Jersey Shore Honor Guard, The Korean War Veterans, The 40 and 8; he was instrumental in the planning and building of the present day American Legion building in Jersey Shore and the creation of the Jersey Shore Veterans Council he also belonged to The BPOE, Wheel Inn, the former Antlers Club, and The Sons of Italy.  He also enjoyed sports and rooting for the New York Yankees.

After military life, he married the former Barbara J. Kohl on July 9, 1971 and she survives. Gunny was active in management and sales of various local automotive dealerships.  Many local people bought their first car from him.

Besides his wife of 47 years, Barbara, he is survived by seven children; John “Skip” Orrico of Harrington, DE, Debra L. Steckenfinger of Rauchtown, Paul Robert Orrico of Williamsport, Cynthia A. Orrico of Jersey Shore, Bret E. Orrico and Aola Maria Orrico both of Cogan Station, and Richard Michael Orrico of Williamsport; 2 step daughters, Robin Bardo of Clayton, OH and Linda McClellan of Jersey Shore; 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. 

In keeping with the wishes of Gunny the Jersey Shore Honor Guard will preside at his graveside service Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 12:30 Pm at the Jersey Shore Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Rearick Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny Street, Jersey Shore.
